Under the new school education curriculum framework consistent with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Maharashtra School Education Department now makes Hindi a mandatory third language for Marathi and Marathi and English secondary schools in grades 1 to 5.
Currently, in categories 1 to 4, only two languages are Marathi and English.
The State Schools Department of Education issued a government resolution (GR) on Wednesday (April 16, 2025) and mentioned the implementation of the new curriculum phase according to NEP 2020 recommendations.

According to GR, all schools in the state currently follow the three-language formula except Marathi and English media, and plan to develop a plan that Hindi will be mandatory from Level 1 to Level 5, starting from the upcoming school year.
The NEP 2020 of 5+3+3+4 school education structure suggests that it will integrate from the basic stage to secondary education. The basic stage is the first five years (in pre-school and 3 years in grade 1 and 2), grades 3 to 5 will be the preparation stage, grades 6 to 8 will be the secondary school, and grades 9 to 12 will be the secondary education.
The syllabus of the State Council will be based on the National Council on Educational Research and Training (NCERT), a local context in Maharashtra in topics such as history, geography and language.
Education from the basic level to the degree level is built on five basic pillars of inclusion, equity, quality, affordability and accountability.
