21 NDA MLA urges PM Modi to restore popular government

Signatories include MLAs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), National People’s Party (NPP) and Naga People’s Front (NPF), representing the Meitei, Naga and Pangal communities. They said hope was initially imposed on the presidential ruling on February 13, but he added, “There is no obvious action so far to achieve peace and normality.”

“We believe that installing a popular government is the only way to restore peace and normality in Manipur. If such a government is restored, we assure you of our full dedication and commitment to this reason,” the MLA said in the letter.

The 21 legislators formed 14 BJP MLAs (including 3 elected in the Janata Dal (joint) vote but later merged with the BJP), three NPP MLAs, two from the NPF and two independents. One MLA claims they now have the support of 32 legislators and may formally advocate for the formation of the government after May 15. They also claim to support 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs.

The Master expressed concern about the possible revival of violence in the state, citing the increasing public incitement of civil society groups opposed to presidential domination. “Open rallies and meetings are accusing the ruling party of law firms for not forming governments. This could worsen the situation.”

The president’s rule was implemented in February after the revolt of BJP lawmakers and Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
