The government told parliament on Thursday that the number of Indian nationals sentenced to death in the UAE but not yet implemented has not yet been implemented. Foreign Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh said in a written response to Rajya Sabha’s inquiry.

According to the government, more than 10,000 Indians currently serve in foreign prisons, including 49 on death row in different countries.

The Foreign Ministry was asked whether many Indians abroad struggled in prisons, as well as details about Indians who were waiting for foreign death penalty, and the efforts made by the Indian government to save lives. Singh shared data related to eight countries and the number of Indian nationals sentenced to death, but the verdict has not been implemented. According to the data, these numbers are 25 (UAE), 11 (Saudi Arabia), six (Malaysia), three (Kuwait), and Indonesia, Qatar, the United States and Yemen.

“Indian missions/foreign missions/posts provide all possible assistance to Indian nationals who are sentenced, including death penalty in foreign courts. Indian missions/posts are also followed up with courts, prisons, prosecutors, prosecutors and other relevant agencies.

Over the past five years, the MEA has also been asked whether it has been executed abroad or has been sentenced to death. The minister said the deaths were conducted in Malaysia, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

The number of Indian citizens executed or subject to death in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia in 2024 is three, and Zimbabwe’s corresponding figure is one of them. In 2023, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia respectively executed five Indians from Malaysia.
