293 students clean up NMMS exams in Tiruchi

A total of 293 students in the Tiruchi area cleared the National Mean Part-time Scholarship (NMMS) exam conducted in February in the 2024-25 academic year.
The region won ninth place in Tamil Nadu. Last year, about 283 students cleared the exam and the district finished seventh. “Although the region has improved compared to the previous year, the region has gone from seventh to ninth,” said D. Dakshinamoorthy, deputy inspector of school education in Tiruchi.
The NMMS exam is conducted annually in the states annually to support students from economically weaker segments of the government and auxiliary schools to continue secondary education.
Class VIII students in government and auxiliary schools took the February exam. Students must score 40% to clear the exam and the selected candidates will receive a monthly scholarship of Rs 1,000 for the next four years until XII class is in.
A team of subject experts trained teachers on the nuances of the exam, forming an academic ability test (SAT) and a psychological ability test (MAT) to guide students. “Training courses for students are held during school hours, even during holidays. Daily exams, weekly revisions and model exams are conducted. Ratings of tests are reviewed regularly and students are closely monitored,” said S. udhayakumar, principal of Tiruchi High School.
Among the public schools in the area, Panchayat Union High School in Ulada Yapati stands out, with 18 students clearing the same school exams. Since 2013-14, about 69 school students have cleared the exam.
“We have been training these students since Level VII. A separate brochure containing important and previous years issues was to guide students. They were also taught to use OMR sheets,” said Headmaster V. Rani.
In terms of NMM success rate, Thanjavur has finished tenth, with 241 students receiving 241 students in Pudukottai, 194 in Tiruvarur, 64 in Nagapattinam, 49 in Perambalur, 37 in Karur, 33 in Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai, 28 in Ariyalur. Tamil Nadu has a total of 6,695 candidates who have qualified for this year, fulfilling the quota allocated by the state.
