32 airports closed for civilian flight operations

New Delhi: According to the civil aviation regulator, 32 airports in the northern and western regions of the country, including Srinagar and Amritsar, have been closed until May 15 and until May 15.

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) and relevant aviation authorities have issued a series of notices to Airmen (Notams) announcing the temporary closure of 32 airports in northern and western India for all civil flight operations.

DGCA said in a press release that it will take effect from May 9, 2025 to May 14, 2025 (which corresponds to 0529 IST due to operational reasons).

These airports include Adhampur, Ambala, Amritsar, Awantipur, Bathinda, Bhuj, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Halwara, Hindon and Jammu.

According to the Civil Space Agency, other airports are Jaisalmer, Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Kandla, Kangra (Gaggal), Keshod, Kishangarh, Kullu Manali (Bhuntar) and Leh.

The press release states that Ludhiana, Mandra, Nalia, Patakot, Patyala, Poland Tar, Rajkot (hirasar), Salsawa, Shimla, Srinagar, Tosivas and Utale are closed airports.

Earlier, at least 24 airports were ordered to close until May 10.

Meanwhile, due to “operational reasons”, AAI has extended the temporary closure of the Air Transport Services (ATS) routes in the 25th section of the Flight Information Area (FIRS) in Delhi and Mumbai.

“UTC until May 14, 2025 (corresponding to 0529 IST on May 15, 2025), the height from ground to infinite will not be able to go from ground to infinite height,” DGCA said.

As a result of the closure of these segments, regulators have recommended that airlines and flight operators plan alternative routes.

It added that the temporary shutdown is being managed in coordination with the relevant ATC units to ensure safety and minimize interference.

India closed its space as part of retaliatory measures after the April 22 Pahargam terrorist attack killed 26 people.

On April 24, Pakistan closed the airspace of Indian Airlines.

On Friday, Air India said in an article on X that its trips to and from Chamu, Srinagar, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Chandigarh, Bhuj, Jamnagar and Rajkot were cancelled on May 5, 2015 as multiple airports in India continue to close.

Indigo said in a post on X that all flights to and from 10 destinations will be cancelled until May 15.
