Still life from a disco dancer
Aamir Khan, Asin, Pradeep Rawat and Jiah Khan-Starrer and Ar Murugudoss-led action thriller Ghajini broke several box office records in 2008 and became the first film in India’s clean home collection to earn Rs 10 billion in India’s net domestic collection, thus establishing a 10 billion club in Indian cinemas. However, the first Indian film to exceed Rs 1,000 crore in the global box office collection was 40 years ago. It turned out to be a sleeper in India and became a huge blockbuster in the Soviet Union. The movie in question is the 1982 dance film Disco Dancer.
The disco dancer, titled Mithun Chakraborty, starred in Satyakim Yashpal aka Kim as the leading lady and has served as Om Puri, Om Shivpuri, Gita Siddharth and Karan Razdan in Rajesh Khanna. The film is written by the famous Urdu and Hindi poet Rahi Masoom Raza and is produced and directed by Babbar Subhash.
The disco dancers made at just Rs 2 crore and made Rs 64 crore in India. When it was released in the Soviet Union in 1984, the film watched the House Theater for weeks and caused a sensation at the box office. Disco dancers earned 60 million rubles, equaling 94.28 crore rupees. As a result, the total revenue of the film was Rs 10082 crore and the disco dancer became the first Indian film to have a box office of Rs 100 crore in the world. As far as the dollar goes, Mithun Chakraborty movies made $59 million overseas. Those numbers even surpass RRR, Pathaan, Jawan and Animal, who made $53 million, $49 million, $46 million, $46 million, and $32 million at the overseas box office. The 1982 release was the sixth box office box office in the overseas market, Secret Superstar, Pushpa 2: Rules, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Baahubali 2: Conclusion. These dollar figures are not adjusted by inflation.
One of the main reasons for the global success of the disco dancers is also the sensational soundtrack of Bappi Lahiri. Songs from this movie include I’m a disco dancer, Jimmy Jimmy Aaja, Koi Yahan Nache and Yaad AA Raha Hai are still very popular today. According to reports, in 2023, director Babbar Subhash is producing a disco dancer sequel. However, there have been no more updates on this information in the past two years.
