Murshidabad Violence: 274 people arrested, 60 firs sent

West Bengal police said on Thursday (April 17, 2025) that there have been 60 flights in connection with violence in the Mershidabad area and the number of arrests has climbed to 274.

Other Police Director General (South Bangladesh) Supratim Sarkar said a special investigation team has been formed under the leadership of Syed Waquar Raza of Dig Dig in the Murshidabad series.

Mr Sarkar added that police have arrested Haragobind Das and Chandan Das, two men in the same family. Police said the defendant Inzamul Haque, who had run away, will give birth in court. ”

“According to our investigation, he is behind the brutal incident on April 12. Not only that, he also tried to hide evidence from the police. He cut off the power from the electrical CCTV in the area and damaged the evidence.”

Stores reopen

Police said we are identifying directly or indirectly everyone involved in these deaths and will not exempt anyone from it. According to West Bengal Police, 70% of stores in violent areas have opened and 85 people have returned home.

Violence broke out in the area of ​​Merhidabad during protests against the WAQF (Amendment) Act. Three people died, hundreds were burned and hundreds were left homeless. Hundreds of people had to escape and shelter in the adjacent Marda area.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma visited parts of Bhangar in the South 24 Parganas District, which also saw violence related to the WAQF (Amendment) bill protests. Mr Verma said the situation was “absolutely peaceful”. Supporters of the Indian Secular Front (ISF) and police clashed during the protests. 17 people have been arrested and the commissioner said more will be arrested.
