Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) Chairman K. Selvaperunthagai said on Saturday (April 19, 2025) that the increase in the consumption tax on gasoline and diesel is an example of “tax terrorism by the Modi government.”
Congress leaders said in a statement that when the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government resigned, the excise tax on petrol and diesel was Rs 9.20 and Rs 3.46, respectively. Since then, gasoline excise tax has increased by 357% and diesel has increased by 54%. “There is no other evidence beyond that [Narendra] Tax terrorism by the Modi government. ” he claimed.
During his tenure at the UPA government, when international crude oil prices fell, the prices of gasoline and diesel also decreased accordingly. He said that even if crude oil is priced at $110 a barrel, the UPA government provides nearly 2 billion rupees a year to avoid burdening people.
“Crude oil prices have fallen by 40% since 2014. But from 2014 to 2025, the coalition government has collected Rs 3.954 crore in taxes due to higher excise taxes on petrol and diesel. This is a clear example of anti-human policy,” added Mr Selvaperunthagai.
