King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk of Bhutan visited IWT Pier in Jogighopa, Assam to learn about its features

Guwahati: The king of Bhutan’s Namgyal Wangchuk visited the IWT terminal in Jogigohopa, Assam to understand its functionality and technical level, an important port for export to Bhutan to the global market.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the IWT terminal as a noteworthy addition to our search for improvement in infrastructure and to encourage progress and prosperity inland waterways.”

The Minister of Ports and Waterways Union of Sarbananda Sonowal opened on 18 February 2025 at the IWT terminal in Jogigopa and opened with His Royal Government, His Excellency Lyonpo Namgyal Dorji, Minister of Industry, Commerce and Employment of the Royal Government. The day IWT Jogighopa started the operation of its business.
Speaking on the visit, Sonowal said, “It is a historic moment when the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk ji visited the recently inaugurated IWT Jogigopa terminal as well as the Jogigopa Multi Modal Logistical Park (MMLP). Both the projects are aligned with the vision of PM Narendra Modi ji’s Act East policy for an inclusive growth and sustainable Development. This visit further deepened long-term friendship, trust and shared prosperity for India and Bhutan.”

The terminal is strategic because it is located 91 km from Gelephu in Bhutan, 91 km from the Bangladesh border 108 km away and 147 km from Guwahati. This makes it crucial to India’s bilateral trade ties with Bangladesh and Bhutan.


The Jogighopau terminal is also one of the call ports announced by Piwt&t between India and Bangladesh. By 2027, the terminal is expected to handle 1.1 million tons of cargo per year. The cost of construction exceeds Rs 82 crore, Jogigopa Terminal has an RCC terminal with its RCC method designed for electrical grade Luffing (Ell) Crane Crane for cargo handling. The terminal also has infrastructure such as the administration building, customs office building, immigration office, truck parking lot, 1100 m2 cover storage area and comes with power backup. Will be the game rules of the larger India-Bhutan region and ensure seamless trade and logistics movements will also help develop Gelephu Histulness City.
