NCW stresses the need for confidence-building measures in Murshidabad; Trinamool MPs visit violently attacked areas

Women in Murshidabad have been the worst victims of public violence, and President of the National Council of Women (NCW) Vijaya Rahatkar, who visited the violence-affected areas of the region on Sunday (20 April 2025), urging the West Bangladesh government to restore normalcy and restore confidence.

Ms Rahatkar said the NCW is preparing reports of the violence and will submit it to the authorities in due course.
“Where we go, we talk to women, we are shocked by their anger. All their dreams are over. They lose everything. They only ask one thing – what is their fault? A few days ago she had a baby. A few days ago, she had to leave the house.
Ms. Rahatkar suggested that the West Bengal Women’s Commission also visited areas that were attacked by violence and listened to stories of women affected by violence.
Along with NCW, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose, and a team from the National Human Rights Commission visited the violence-affected areas over the weekend. The governor also encountered families affected by violence and said the situation was far from normal.
Three people were killed during the violence erupting in the Dhulian and Samserganj areas from April 11 to 12. The protests began with the WAQF (Amendment) Act and soon turned into a public conflict.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders called NCW’s visit to areas affected by violence “political motivation”.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, the TMC leaders delegation from the party’s Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Islam and Jangipur MP Khalilur Rehman visited the violently affected areas and encountered the violently dead father and son with the families of Hargobind Das and Chandan Das. Islam said: “The government will take all measures to ensure safety and security. We hope that there will be no such incident in the future.”

The third death was Ezaj Ahmed Sheikh, 21, who died of injuries during police operations.
West Bengal police arrested a fourth person related to the killing of Hargobind Das and Chandan Das. Ziaul Sheikh, a resident of Sulitala Purbapara, a resident of the village near Jafrabad, was arrested in Chopra in the Uttar Dinajpur district of the north.
Another person was arrested Saturday in connection with violence in the area.
Police Chief Jangipur Ananda Roy said 287 people were arrested for violence in Murshidabad, and the number of arrests of two others has increased to 289. Mr Roy said there has been no violence in the area since April 12.
