Members of the Secular Constitution Protection Forum held a demonstration on Monday.
The forum, a newly formed institution consisting primarily of leftists, Muslim organizations and Dalit clothing, condemned the coalition’s amendment to the WAQF bill, saying it was a flagrant violation of constitutional protection against minorities.
Also convener of the forum, P. Anjaiah, convener of the Republican Party of India (RPI), questioned the central government’s “over-excess” as an area of minority rights. The Muslim community was clearly divided on this issue, with community leaders representing Congress and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) participating in numerous demonstrations.
Mullahs and Mutawalli of various mosques also participated in a large number of events and expressed dissatisfaction with the provisions of the new bill.
