The opposition Congress Judicial Association (MLAS) shocked the alleged crimes against women in the state on Friday (21 March 2025), forcing Speaker Surama Padhy to convene a full-party meeting after multiple adjournment failed to normalize the situation.

The house started out in the question hour, with excited Congressional judicial assistance hitting the well and trying to climb up the speaker’s podium.

Members of Congress MLAS, wearing an all-black dress, beat the gong and blew the flute, drew the attention of speakers, seeking to rule that the House committee was formed to investigate crimes against women in the state.

The speaker was unable to operate the house and adjourned the proceedings for an hour until 11.30 am.

After the conference was reassembled, the protest continued, and a spokesperson adjourned the proceedings 30 minutes to 12 p.m.

She also convened a whole party meeting to normalize the situation.

The house has been under protests over the past few days.

Senior Congressional Congress MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati was suspended for a week during a similar incitement to the issue, and he returned to parliament and led opposition demonstrations.

“We will continue to protest inside and outside the convention until a House committee is established until women are formed,” said Rama Chandra Kadam, the leader of the Congress Legislative Party.

Bahinipati claims that the state government is doing its best to suppress the voices of the opposition in the General Assembly.

“I was suspended for seven working days for requesting a House committee,” he said.

Arun Kumar Sahoo, a senior member of BJD, said his party’s MLA protested in the House, and decided to restrict the press from taking photos and videos of opposition demonstrations in parliament.

He claimed: “This act violates the basic knowledge of democracy.
