Premium trains in India, faster trains, Shatabdi Express has these facilities and does not operate on long distance routes, know why

Shatabdi Express is like Rajdhani Express, considered a premium train with one of the fastest trains. Its speed and premium facilities make it one of India’s most popular trains. However, they are used to operate on short-circuit and mid-distance routes connecting major cities between countries. Their short distances are for easy travel.

Since Shatabdi Express is a one-day train, it starts in the morning or at noon and ends in the evening and returns to its destination on the same day. Their optimal speed is approximately 110–150 km/h (68–93 mph), depending on the type of route infrastructure. They let passengers complete the journey on the same day. Having said that, wondering why Shatabdi isn’t traveling on longer routes and is so efficient? We did not find Shatabdi Express running between many other long-distance cities.

Why doesn’t Shatabdi Express run on long-distance routes?

They do not operate on longer routes, as they are used to travel between close-range areas between almost no intermediate stops. It is conceptualized to travel between shorter routes as it makes travel faster, convenient and complete a journey. Shatabdi Express is designed to take round trips that can be completed on the same day. Therefore, Shatabdi only has seats and does not have sleeper berths. When Rajdhani Express took on the premium train for long-distance routes, Shatabdi Express was introduced into shorter routes.

Shatabdi’s Facilities

The Shatabdi train is fully air-conditioned and passengers can take advantage of its in-car dining. An onboard entertainment system is also provided, providing content via satellite in selected trains. Since these trains are not like regular trains, seats must be booked in advance, as there are no reserved travel options. Bookings can be made before the scheduled departure time until 30 minutes, and seats will be automatically assigned through the reservation system.
