Scientists visit Polavaram to check the quality of dam construction

Vijayawada: Three scientists from the Central Soil and Materials Research Station (CSMR) in New Delhi visited the Polavaram project site in the Erluru area on Tuesday. They collected rock samples and material samples used to build the Polavaram Dam. These will be subject to quality audits to ensure that ongoing construction work is the prescribed quality standards.

Scientist Sandeep Dhanote was involved in the collection of rock samples at the project site. As the dam crosses Godavari, the river water will be detained to a height of 45.72 meters to meet the needs of drinking water, irrigation and hydropower, the dam, state and central authorities are taking all precautions to check the quality of available rocks used to build the dam.

Some samples collected are being tested in the field lab, while others are taken to CSMR in New Delhi to check several parameters.

It is estimated that building the Polavaram dam and other components of the project will require nearly ten million cubic meters of rock. Given such a huge demand, authorities are checking the quality of the rock to check its applicability to the project.
Another team of scientists, composed of Ravi Agarwal and Lalith Kumar Solanki, is evaluating the quality of the materials, mainly concrete used to build diaphragm walls, and other components. As D-Wall plays a crucial role in the construction of the main Polavaram dam, authorities are conducting a mandatory quality audit of the materials used. This is to ensure that the structure built is strong to maintain all weather conditions.

These scientists who regularly visit dam site inspections are submitting reports regularly. These reports are analyzing each time. Based on reports from these analyses, the design of various components of the project will be ready for final approval by the Central Water Commission (CWC).

“With the momentum of dam engineering, a team of scientists and experts are regularly visiting project locations to ensure the quality of the entire project,” said R. Ramachandra Rao, principal engineer at Polavaram Project.
