Saha solves flood fears on Bangladesh border embankments

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Tuesday that his government has taken the necessary measures to respond to the construction of large-scale embankments along the border of the South Prilara region.

Bangladesh has built embankments in Kali Kapoor, on the flood-prone banks of the Muhli River, which extends along the Indo-Banglad River border in the South Prilara region. State PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte visited the area after local elected representatives expressed concerns about flooding in the town of Belonia, Ballamukh and Amjadnagar.

Floods and landslides in August 2024 damaged many rivers along the border of India’s Bangladesh, further attracting residents’ attention.

The Minister assured that the situation was being closely monitored and given a top priority.

Mr. Jit said the government plans to build a dam on the river bank to protect the low-lying areas of Belonia, which is also the headquarters of the South Prilara region.

The chief minister said the “barrier” created by the Bangladesh Border Defense Ministry Guard (BGB) has also taken measures to stop the maintenance of the dam in Kailashhahar in the Unakoti region. Pre-monsoon maintenance of the dam on the bank of the Manu River has been stopped due to BGB objections. The flood control department recently started repair work, but the repair work was not allowed to continue due to protests in Bangladesh.
