Abhishek Manu Singhvi, a senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member, reviewed the joint legislative committee of simultaneous elections on Tuesday (22 April 2025) at the Joint Committee of Parliament’s Congress on Tuesday (22 April 2025), any law seeking to subordinate the national election cycle to the center and causing artificial labor to weaken the position of the parliament, making the basic structure of the composition violate the famous structure.

He spoke on the Joint Constitutional Committee (129 Amendment) Act of 2024 and was led by BJP leader and Lok Sabha member PP Chaudhary, in 2024, the Joint Territorial Act (Amendment) Act. Rarely a current MP called on the committee to revoke it.

Sources said Mr Singhway’s speech lasted for an hour and followed by a 90-minute discussion.

Three accounts

His criticism of the bill is usually centered on three accounts. Mr Singhvi believes that first, attempting to subfer the state election cycle to parliamentary elections is an infringement of federal principles and thus violates the basic structure of the Constitution. According to the model recommended by the Ramnath Kovind Chairman’s High Commission, Mr Singhway said several states would suffer huge reductions.

Second, by seeking to reset the parliamentary election cycle by artificially truncating its term of office, the bill violates the will of the people, which is the basis of any democracy.

He also pointed to important weaknesses in the bill. Sources said Mr Singhway pointed out that such legislation could not be passed without the approval of more than half of the state legislatures. Additionally, he said that interference to the election cycle of the state assembly will also indirectly affect the shape of Rajya Sabha.

According to sources, Mr Singhway did not propose legislation, but believed that the government should consider reducing the election deadline, which would also directly lower the Model Code of Conduct. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders believe that governance has been affected by the long-term imposition of codes of conduct for election models. In 2024, the election was divided into seven stages in six weeks, while in 2019, the election was held in seven stages in seven weeks.

Sources said a specific question raised by Congress leader and Lok Sabha member Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, how the elections will affect the political parties in the region, Mr Singhwi cited the report of the Ramnas Kovind Commission, citing the parties that won the center in most cases will also win in the country.
