Canada Election 2025: What could Mark Carney’s victory over India’s freedom? Explanation |Indian News

Canadian Election 2025: Mark Carney’s victory and Liberals in the Canadian federal elections have made him a road for the restart of India-Canadian relations. Carney, a former central bank now becomes a politician, putting his recovery ties with India at the top of the agenda, marking a strategic deviation in former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s foreign policy.
New approach to India
Carney highlighted the diversity of Canada’s international partnerships during his campaign, saying he will “look forward to the opportunity to build new relationships with India based on shared democratic values.
“What Canada is going to do is diversify our transactional relationship with like-minded countries and have the opportunity to rebuild our relationship with India,” he said.
Carney’s remarks were made at historic lows when bilateral relations followed diplomatic tensions in 2023.
Trudeau’s diplomatic failure
India-Canada relations are huge, Trudeau blames Indian agents for alleged murder of Canadian citizens and Hardeep Singh Nijjar of the Khalistan separatist, which has caused a huge change in India-Canada relations. India claims the allegation is unfounded and is politically motivated.
The crisis intensified in October 2024, with Canada expelling six Indian diplomats, and India has taken similar moves. Trade talks were put on hold and top interactions were frozen.
New Delhi accused the Trudeau government of closing its eyes on Khalistan extremism and doing nothing among Canadian Sikh diaspora opposes blasphemy of Hindu temples and hate speech.
Carney’s global vision
Carney, 60, who has led the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, has developed a foreign policy based on democratic alliances and economic independence. He has been criticizing former U.S. President Donald Trump and favors minimizing trade dependence on any country.
In a February interview, he said on average: “Different people, different policies, different management methods”, which marked a new era of Canadian diplomacy.
Trade, focus on immigration
Despite diplomatic tensions, immigrants from India remain strong under Trudeau’s leadership. Carney may have strong immigration links, especially for students and tech professionals. Currently, more than 427,000 Indian students are studying in Canada, forming an important pillar of the Canadian economy.
One of the key tasks in the future will be to restore the long-standing Integrated Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the two countries. Bilateral trade in services in 2023 is 13.49 crore. Collaborations in AI, fintech, green energy and education may gain new momentum under Carney.
Strategic importance of India
Carney positioned India as a strategic balance in the ever-changing world order, especially in the face of fear of authoritarianism and global trade fluctuations. In New Delhi, his election was on alert, and officials were waiting to see if the tone and policy really changed.
Whether Carney can bring sustainable melting in India-Canada relations will depend on initial actions, including potential diplomatic efforts, trade negotiations, and stance on Canadian extremist activities.
