GHMC retains EESL service for 2 months

Hyderabad: As Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) ended on April 30 and no new tender was invited, GHMC proposed to continue using its services for two months. The GHMC Standing Committee approved the proposal on Thursday.
The company had earlier considered suppliers who outsourced their work directly with EESL, but procurement regulations made such an arrangement unfeasible. “It is also impossible to start a new vendor onboarding process in such a short window,” the official explained.
Currently, 23 engineers and ward staff are handling street light maintenance. GHMC has over 5.25 million street lights, many of whom are non-functional even before the EESL contract expires, which creates inconvenience for commuters and keeps commuting roads unobstructed.
Ongoing issues such as failures in centralized control and monitoring systems (CCM), wiring defects and employee failure to respond to complaints all add to the challenges. Even before the contract expires, payments to EESL are delayed, and GHMC likes poor performance in payment holdings.
Whether to invite a new tender or an extension of the EESL contract will remain the decision of the state government. Together with the EESL proposal, the Standing Committee also approved 11 other recommendations related to the development works.
