On Friday (May 2, 2025), collective responsibility is called for to ensure the dignity, happiness and well-being of the elderly population in India, emphasizing the role of the elderly as wisdom and tradition, calling for collective responsibility.
Ms. Murmu's speech on the “Aging with Dignity” program held by Rashtrapati Bhavan, held here, highlighted the valuable contribution of the elderly in shaping society and guiding future generations.
“Older people are an important connection to our past and guide our future,” she said. She urged all citizens to continue to commit to their own welfare and learn from their tremendous experience.

“Our seniors represent wisdom, prudence and tradition. We must ensure that their dignity and health are a shared obligation,” she said.
She called on citizens to “respect their existence, value their guidance and cherish their company.” She praised the Ministry of Social Justice and Authorization (MOSJE) for launching a number of measures aimed at ensuring the dignity of the lives of older people, and she praised the opening of a dedicated portal for older people, describing it as a “one-stop digital platform” to support their needs.
“Respect for elders embedded in our traditions”
The president notes that cultural values maintain respect for the elders, saying: “Respect for parents and elders is in our tradition. In many families, children are happiest to their grandparents. Often, children do not accept their parents’ acceptance and they are happy to accept it when their grandparents are told by their grandparents.” She also acknowledges the emotional and psychological support provided by senior family members.
“When elders see their family thriving, their physical and mental health will also improve. They are the emotional pillars of their families,” she said.
However, Ms. Ms. Mourmu expressed concern about the evolving challenges facing older people.
“Economic growth and modernization, young people often work, leaving behind elders who long for love and respect. Sometimes, even if parents live with their children, they don't get the feelings and dignity they deserve. Sadly, some people even think that older people are burdens.”
She calls them “a warehouse of knowledge,” and she emphasizes their potential to guide youth and strengthen the country’s progress.
“Our seniors can lead society and nation to greater prosperity,” she said.
Prior to the plan, Ms. Murmu interacted with five older adults who shared their life experiences. She praises their role in promoting social unity through stories and perspectives.
She also cited some government initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for older people, such as Ayushman Bharat-PM Jan Arogya Yojana, which provides up to Rs 5 lakh annually for citizens aged 70 and over.
“The health of our older adults is essential to coaching families and society,” she noted.
