PM Modi announces $200 million for the modernization of the Angolan armed forces

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on May 3, 2025 (May 3, 2025) that it had provided Angola with a $200 million defense credit and expressed its commitment to take firm and decisive action against terrorists and their supporters, a few days after the Pahargam terrorist attack.

Prime Minister Modi spoke after extensive talks with Angolan President Joao Manuel Goncalves Laurenco, which focused on improving overall bilateral relations, including in the field of digital public infrastructure.

The Prime Minister said in a media statement that Mr. Laurenko's visit to India not only provides new directions for bilateral relations, but also strengthens the India-Africa partnership.

“I am pleased to announce India's $200 million defense line to support the modernization of the Angolan Defence Force,” he said.

The Prime Minister also said there were also discussions on repairs, overhauls and supplying defense platforms.

Modi said India will also share its capabilities with Angola in the areas of digital public infrastructure, space technology and capacity building. “We have also decided to further strengthen our relationships in healthcare, diamond processing, fertilizers and key minerals.”

The Prime Minister also said: “We are committed to taking firm and decisive actions against terrorists and those who support them.”

He stressed the importance of the relationship between India and the African Union, saying: “We are ongoing partners and we are the backbone of the global South.”

Mr Laurenko took a four-day trip on Thursday.
