Third-year IIT Kharagpur student found dead in hotel room

A third-year BTECH student, found IIT Kharagpur, was found hanging in his hotel room on Sunday, an official said. The official said the body of Mohammad Asif Qamar was found hanging in his hotel room at Madanmohan Malviya Hall on the IIT Kharagpur campus.

Qamar, a third-year student in the Civil Engineering Department, has locked his doors from the inside since Saturday night and quoted his friend and the principal of the hotel. Police officers at the campus police outpost were told Sunday morning that they opened the door and found him hanging. Qamar comes from Seohar district of Bihar. His family was told.

A senior police officer confirmed the death. He said the police had some clues and the investigation was underway. Prima Facie, he said, is a suicide case, but an investigation is underway. On April 20, Aniket Walkar, a fourth-year student in the Department of Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture, was found hanging in his hotel room.

On January 12, the body of third-year undergraduate student Shaon Malik was found in his hotel room. In June 2024, Devika Pillai, a fourth-year student in biotechnology and biochemical engineering, died of suicide.

IIT Kharagpur authorities said the study was all 24×7 hours counselors to help students fight any stress and frustration. After April 20, the institute barcoded at the door of each boarder, and any boarder can scan it in case of acute mental stress to provide immediate consultation on privacy.

Acting Director Amit Patra told PTI earlier: “A committee is being formed to explore the situation and reasons behind such tragedies, and the committee will make recommendations within three days.” He said: “The happiness, happiness and academic achievements of our students are important to us. They are our children.”
