The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday (May 6, 2025) that the southwest monsoon system is expected to sail into certain areas of the Southeast Bay of Bangladesh and the Nicobar Islands, which are some areas of the Southeast Bay of Bangladesh and the Nicobar Islands. The monsoon system is divided into two branches: the Bay of Bengal branch and the Arabian sea branch to reach the Bay of Bengal region. It was the arrival of the Arabian branch to Kerala that herald the beginning of the monsoon on the Indian continent. The Bay of Bengal branch began within a week in northeastern India.
The IMD has a dedicated monsoon model for predicting the onset dates in Kerala and is expected to be announced in mid-May. IMD said last month that India could receive “above normal” monsoon rainfall, or 5% higher than the historical average of 87 cm. Last year, the Southwest Monsoon was scheduled to extend in Kerala on May 30, two days before the normal and forecast date.
