The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday (May 6, 2025) that the southwest monsoon system is expected to sail into certain areas of the Southeast Bay of Bangladesh and the Nicobar Islands, which are some areas of the Southeast Bay of Bangladesh and the Nicobar Islands. A senior meteorologist told Hindu.

The normal onset date for the Kerala monsoon is June 1, and the system usually takes 10 days to get from Nicobar Islands to Kerala. “The early arrival of Nicobar at Nicobar does not necessarily mean that the monsoon will arrive in Kerala as soon as possible,” said D. Sivananda Pai, senior meteorologist at IMD. “May 13 was a little unusual, but it only indicated that there was an increase in cross-reserve flow for the monsoon. On May 15, when the monsoon arrived in Kerala, it had arrived in Kerala on May 15. ”

He said strong transequoral flows could indicate the development of the cyclone, which is typical of the month before the monsoon attack.

The monsoon system is divided into two branches: the Bay of Bengal branch and the Arabian sea branch to reach the Bay of Bengal region. It was the arrival of the Arabian branch to Kerala that herald the beginning of the monsoon on the Indian continent. The Bay of Bengal branch began within a week in northeastern India.

The IMD has a dedicated monsoon model for predicting the onset dates in Kerala and is expected to be announced in mid-May. IMD said last month that India could receive “above normal” monsoon rainfall, or 5% higher than the historical average of 87 cm. If you have to endure it will be the second year of “above normal” rainfall. Last year, India received 8% higher than the historical average from June to September.

Last year, the Southwest Monsoon was scheduled to extend in Kerala on May 30, two days before the normal and forecast date.

This is also unusual, as both branches of the monsoon are located in northeastern India and Kerala. The two eventually merged in central India and maintained the southwestern monsoon until the end of September.
