FTA Perks: UK sells 22,000 premium electric vehicles in India

New Delhi: Britain will receive a quota to sell 22,000 high-value electric vehicles to India with a lower 10% duty, while New Delhi will receive a quota to sell low and mid-range electric vehicles to the UK under India-UK FTA.Duty-free imports of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles from the UK are limited to predefined quotas under the agreement, while duty-free quotas for electric vehicles are limited to thousands of people, people familiar with the matter said.
India will reduce the tariffs on cars to more than 100% now. “Electric vehicles outside this quota have not reduced responsibilities,” one official said.

India's decision to immediately lower the tariffs on Scotch whisky to 75%, with 40% in a decade only causing an increase in imports without significantly affecting the domestic market, the official said.


“Reducing tariffs from 150% will also help increase FDI in the field,” the official said. The official said that while India has not yet made any gains on this FTA’s visa-related issues, the UK offers a mobility commitment, allowing 1,800 yoga instructors, classical musicians, chefs and independent professionals in computer and related services as well as research and development services each year.
