Girl with RETT syndrome undergoes scoliosis surgery at Thanjavur hospital

Scoliosis was performed on a 12-year-old girl from thanjavur who suffered from RETT syndrome complications that helped her breathe new life.

According to Dr. M. Karthikeyan, senior consultant for Meenakshi Hospital in Thanjavur, the girl was taken to the hospital a year ago due to spinal curves and RETT syndrome. A closer examination concluded that scoliosis alone would be the solution to the patient’s spinal cord problems.

She was then performed on the surgery team, in which the surgical team used the advanced technology “Intra-operative Neurological Monitoring” (IONM), which helps track the spinal cord and nerve conditions in real time during the intervention, making the surgery safer and more accurate. Dr. Karthikeyan said the physical therapy team played a crucial role in helping girls recover their strength and mobility, and patients are doing well now with the ongoing help of the medical and nursing staff team after the surgery.

S. Gurushankar, chairman of Thanjavur Meenakshi Hospital, praised the surgical team for saying scoliosis is not uncommon, but is often overlooked in rural areas due to lack of awareness and screening programs. Many mild cases have not attracted attention. He said that if discovered early, it is usually possible to use braces or support tape to avoid surgery.
