The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) of the Government of India issued a formal consultation on Thursday directing all OTT platforms, streaming services and digital intermediaries to stop carrying any content from Pakistan, citing concerns about national security and public order.

Under the approval of the consultation, published with the approval of the competent authority and signed by Deputy Director Kshitij Aggarwal, all publishers of online curated content, media streaming platforms and intermediaries must follow the
Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Regulations) Rules, 2021.

The Code of Ethics of Rules requires publishers to act cautiously, which affects India’s sovereignty and integrity, threatens the security of the country, endangers diplomatic relations or disrupts public order.

The ministry pointed to multiple terrorist attacks related to cross-border elements, including the recent attacks in Pahalgam that killed several Indian nationals and a Nepali citizen on April 22, the ministry noted that the network, movies, songs, podcasts and other content from Pakistan must be immediately stopped on the basis of subscription or otherwise.

The consultation is in accordance with the Notice of Caution and Law Enforcement under Rule 2021, warning that the platform shall not host, display, upload, publish or transmit any content that threatens India’s unity, integrity and sovereignty or dangerous public order.
