Rachel Reeves countered Labour MPs, calling on the government to reconsider its welfare cut reforms.
More than 40 MPs from across the party have written to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, urging him to reassess the planned cuts this week to reduce disability benefits this week.
The government intends to tighten the eligibility of individual independent payments (PIP) to save about £5 billion a year, which is expected to affect about 700,000 people.
Member of Congress warn These proposals “caused anxiety and concern among people with disabilities and their families.”
A public vote on the plan is expected in June.
If all the MPs who wrote to the Prime Minister rebel against the government, it would be the biggest uprising of Labor since its election in July.
But when talking to broadcasters on Friday, the prime minister doubled down on the government’s plans, saying reforming the entire system was crucial.
“I think anyone, including labor MPs and members, thinks the current welfare system created by the Conservatives is working today,” Reeves said.
“They know that the system needs reform. If we are going to develop the economy, we do need to reform the welfare system.
“But it is crucial that if we are to lift people out of poverty and give more people the opportunity to reach their potential, the focus must be on supporting people to work.
“Of course, if you can’t work, the welfare state must always be with you and will be with this government. But there are a lot of people trapped in the interest of desperately needing work, and these people need a long time.
The strong opposition is that laborers performed particularly poorly in local elections, with the British Right-wing reform occupying more than 600 council seats and winning the Runcorn and Helsby by-elections.
HuffPost UK also revealed today the possibility of a prime minister changing Labor’s winter fuel payment policy after strong opposition this week.
This is due to the election damage caused by the plan, and the anger of the workforce members of Congress has grown.
