Earthquake with amplitude 4.0 strike Pakistan: NCS | World News

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake on the Richter scale hit Pakistan in the early hours of Saturday. The tremor was recorded at 1:44 am IST, with its epicenter at 29.67°N, a longitude of 66.10°E and a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

This marks the fourth earthquake that has hit the country in recent weeks, highlighting the rise in tectonic activity in the region.

A series of recent tremors have attracted attention

Just a few days ago, on May 5, it was reported that a magnitude 4.2 earthquake occurred near the Chitrier district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province at 4:00 pm. On the same day, IST recorded another 4.2 magnitude tremor in neighboring Afghanistan at 12:35 pm.

On April 30, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake hit 31.08°N and 68.84°E and 50 kilometers deep. The strongest in the current series was April 12, when a magnitude 5.8 quake rattled at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers in parts of the country, raising concerns about possible aftershocks.

High earthquake risk zone

Pakistan is located in one of the most active regions in the world, on the border between India and Eurasian tectonic plates. Areas such as Bal Luchistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Punjab and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir are particularly vulnerable due to their proximity to the main fault lines.

Experts warn that the ongoing tectonic pressure in these areas continues to raise the risk of major seismic activity. Authorities are monitoring the situation, although so far, no damage or casualties have been reported on Saturday’s earthquake.
