Adi Dravidar and the tribal welfare department initiated steps for an ambitious project to create a digital repository called “Suvadugal” to record and preserve the traditional performing arts of Adi Dravidar and tribal communities in Tamil Nadu.

According to official sources, the project aims to digitally archive thousands of indigenous art forms and oral traditions that have faded over time. Tamil Nadu has a vibrant array of artistic expressions, from folk dance and music traditions to the production of unique instruments and costumes – all deeply rooted in the cultural structure of these communities.

R. Kaleeswaran, founder of the Alternative Media Center, a nonprofit that works for the welfare of folk artists, said several art forms practiced by Adi Dravidar and the tribal community are now on the verge of extinction. These communities across the state are still executing more than 560 art forms. Some notable examples include Singari Melam From Dindigul, Radha Kavadi From Nagapattinam, Kaniyan Koothu From Tirunelveli, Periya Melam From Tiruvannamalai, Perum parai From Anthiyur and Malai Koothu From Dharmapuri.

However, many of these traditions remain unproven or falsely stated in mainstream cultural narratives. Mr Kaleeswaran, former coordinator of Loyola College in Chennai, said they also face increasing threats due to rapid socio-economic changes and institutional support.

“For example, Bootha Kabala Aatam It is a unique ritual performance seen only in specific temples in the Dharmapuri district. Today, only a few artists continue to practice it. Without proper preservation, this tradition may disappear completely. ” he said.

He added that the “Suvadugal” project aims to record these endangered art forms and musical instruments in an audio-visual format, thereby creating a comprehensive digital archive to ensure their revival and spread to future generations.
