Protests outside Karachi bakery in Hyderabad demanded a name change

Hyderabad: Police said on Sunday that a group of people held a protest at the Karachi bakery storefront here, demanding the name change.

On Saturday afternoon, about 10-15 members, holding tricolor and saffron scarfs, gathered in front of the Karachi bakery in Shamshabad and put forward the “Anti-Pakistan slogan”.

Protesters allegedly tried to hit the list of sockets by hitting the stick. They were then dispersed by the police.

In a video circulated on social media on Sunday, the list board was partially covered on a piece of cloth.

A police official at the RGI Airport Police Department said: “The protest was held on Saturday afternoon at 10-15 people, demanding the Karachi bakery name change.”

He added that complaints were filed against protesters accusing them of hindering customers by putting the protests in front of the exit.

The promoters of the city bakery chain earlier clarified that they are “100% Indian brands” in cases where some groups requested a name change, citing a connection to a city in Pakistan.

Protests were also held in Visaka Patnam last week, demanding the name of the Karachi bakery amid conflicts between India and its neighbors.

On May 7, a leader of the right-wing group posted a video on social media asking for a change of name or they would do it themselves, police officers deployed on May 7 near one of a bakery branch in Hyderabad.

Rajesh Ramnani and Harish Ramnani, the sponsors of Karachi Bakery, said the brand was founded in Hyderabad in 1953 by their grandfather Khanchand Ramnani, who moved from Pakistan to India during the zoning period.

They also called on Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, DGP and police to help them retain Karachi Bakery’s brand identity and prevent any forced name changes.

Earlier, the tri-color also showed above the list of city sockets.
