Bill Gates announced that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will use its entire $200 billion endowment in 2045 to improve global health. This means that the foundation he co-founded with his ex-wife Melinda France Gate will be closed by December 31, 2045. Gates said the acceleration plan is necessary and influential. Melinda, who has long supported the foundation’s work, calls the decision “great.”
The main goal of this expenditure is to combat global problems such as eliminating deadly diseases such as polio and malaria, preventing maternal and child deaths, and reducing poverty. The foundation’s annual budget is expected to reach $9 billion by 2026 and grow to $10 billion in the following years.
However, Gates also strongly criticized Elon Musk for hurting poor children around the world. This criticism follows massive cuts to the U.S. foreign aid budget, which was overseen by Musk in the role of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Musk had previously joked on social media about the removal of the United States International Development Agency (USAID), calling it “studying into wood shavings.”
These aid cuts are severe, and 80% of the U.S.A.I.D. program plans are expected to be eliminated. In 2023 alone, the agency spent $44 billion to help people around the world. Gates warned that private foundations like him cannot take over the role of government in helping the world’s poorest people. He expressed concern that important progress in combating disease and hunger could be reversed.
During a fierce moment online, Musk responded to an article in an interview with Gates, calling him a “scammer” on X (formerly Twitter). Musk’s team did not provide any further comments.
Despite these tensions, Gates said he is still hopeful. He believes that in the next 20 years, the government will once again prioritize children’s health and survival. He also praised some African governments for stepping up their efforts by redistributed funds to continue critical aid efforts.
The announcement comes as the Gates Foundation celebrates its 25th anniversary. Gates, together with Melinda, formed the organization in 2000, and was later joined by billionaire investor Warren Buffett.
