Fighting the wake-up call that keeps daydreaming

We are all daydreaming moments – at work, at home, on the bus, even if we sit on the toilet. For many daydreaming it is an emotional escape, but for some it can be an invasive, never-ending cycle. Dream dreams for hours to seek and worry about, involving past, future life partners, luxury houses, luxury cars, comfortable work and bank balance, etc. The laundry list for daydreaming is endless! This is the difference between a poorly adaptive dream and a healthy dream.

Maladaptive dreaming is a vicious cycle that constantly drags in and captures you. “Typical daydreaming is occasional and transient, while maladaptive daydreaming is durable and immersive. It is often difficult to control,” said Dr. Archana Nanduri, founder of Vidyaranya Consulting Centre in Hyderabad. Dr. Archana explains that people with poor adaptive daydreaming may spend hours in the fantasy world. They ignore responsibilities, social interactions and even basic self-care.
