Officials said four special needs children died, and at least 16 were sick, after allegedly having dinner at the government rehabilitation center in the state capital Pala area.

He said two other seriously ill children were referred to another government hospital and surrendered. He added that the remaining 16 situations improved.

A medical team has been sent to the shelter to observe the health of the remaining children.

“About seven children are under medical observation at home in the shelter. The health department has taken the attention of the children there in the shelter home.”

He formed a committee to determine the cause of so-called food poisoning.

Another official said officials from the health and food safety department visited the hospital to interview affected children.

Both departments have collected food samples from rehabilitation centers.

“Action will be taken based on the investigation report,” an official source said.

According to district probation officer Vikas Singh, the center has 147 children, mainly orphans and mentally challenged children.
