APR-FEB’s decline in coal imports helps save Rs 53,138 in foreign exchange

According to an official statement on Tuesday, India’s coal imports fell 9.2% to 220.3 million tonnes (MT) between April and February 2024-25, resulting in a foreign exchange saving of approximately Rs 531,378.2 crore. The country imported 242.6 tons of coal in the same period last year.

The decline in non-controlled sectors, excluding the power sector, was even greater, with imports down 15.3%.

“Although coal generation increased by 2.87% from April 2024 to February 2025 from the previous year, imports of thermal power plants mixed fell sharply by 38.8%.”
This highlights the country’s ongoing efforts to reduce its dependence on imported coal and increase self-sufficiency in coal production.

The center has implemented several initiatives, including commercial coal mines, to enhance domestic coal production and reduce imports.


These efforts also resulted in a 5.45% increase in coal production from April to February 2024-25, compared with the same period in 2023-24.
