The host of the BBC match and former England captain reposted his 1.2 million Instagram followers a clip with a mouse emoji – prompting Jewish groups to condemn him and call for him to be cut off by the broadcaster.
Lineker, 64, removed the footage from the “Stories” reel on social media sites yesterday afternoon – a spokesperson for the former football player now provides an explanation on his behalf.
But philanthropic activists have today accused Lineker of committing “excessive and reckless indifference” in his response and reinforced calls for the BBC to separate him.
The former Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona and three Lions stars have been voice rivals to Israel’s military operations in Gaza, but critics say his latest intervention is too far off.
Nazi Germany often used images of rats and other pests as metaphors to portray Jews, as many pointed out in response.
However, he now insists that he does not know the symbolism, while not noting that the image of rats is displayed in the Palestine Hall clip – attacking the concept of Zionism – he shares the concept of Zionism online.
