Karnataka government believes that freezes computer science engineering seat enhancement

The state government is considering freezing the enhancement of Computer Science Engineering (CSE) seats to prevent future urban private engineering colleges and future job losses.

The Telangana High Court recently upheld the Telangana government’s decision on strengthening the CSE seat, and the Minister of Higher Education MC Sudhakar said the order is being reviewed.

“Last year, the Telangana government put restrictions on the CSE seats of the private engineering colleges. This is challenged by the administration of some private engineering universities in the High Court. It is reported that the court upheld the Telangana government’s action, which maintained the petition of the private engineering college. In this case, the private needs to be competent. Hindu.

According to the notification seat matrix for engineering and architecture courses in the state’s higher education department, there are 1,32,309 seats out of 245 engineering colleges for the 2024-25 academic year. These include 62,930 seats under the government quota, 28,656 seats under the Comed-K quota, and 5,155 seats under the Super Stock quota. Of these, about 45,000 seats belong only to CSE and related courses.

Currently, there is a high demand for CSE seating due to job availability and other reasons. The All-India Technical Education Commission (AICTE) is the authority to enhance the new engineering colleges under infrastructure, courses and seats.

The Council removed the ceiling for engineering admissions and allowed engineering seats to be enhanced according to the needs of the College of Engineering.

Using this as an excuse, some private engineering colleges have increased the number of seats than state infrastructure-based restrictions by obtaining AICTE licenses. Some universities only have 1,500 to 2,000 seats and are only used in CSE courses.

Letter to Ekter

This leads to an imbalance between traditional and emerging engineering disciplines, the rise of engineering colleges in first-class cities and the increase in seating for a course, resulting in a lack of work related to the course in the future.

Mr. Sudhakar wrote to AICTE in October 2023, expressing concern about its leniency norms, which he believes has led to excessive concentration in the engineering colleges in Tier-1 city and has offered a large number of courses in popular disciplines such as CSE. He said it undermines the balance of technical education across the state.

He also requires AICTE to ask the state government not to object to the Certificate (NOC) before approving any application. However, Ekter reportedly did not respond positively to the minister’s letter.

“AICTE allows the number of new universities, courses and seat enhancements to be added only by looking at the basic infrastructure. However, it will not consider issues that will be added by adding seats for the same course in the future. Hopefully, action will be taken to freeze CSE seats after a thorough study of the matter and the details are obtained from the Telangana government,” the minister said.

“It is no secret that there are more job opportunities for computer science and related engineering graduates in the job market at the moment. Therefore, there is a high demand for these courses in colleges with good infrastructure. I do not know for what purpose the government is saying that the seats of CSE should be frozen. This year too, we have applied to AICTE for CSE seat enhancement, and we are expecting it to be approved,” said the principal of a private engineering college that just started last year.
