Justice BR Gavai serves as India’s 52nd Chief Justice

Justice Br Gavai was sworn in as Chief Justice of India (CJI) at a ceremony held in Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday morning. President Droupadi Murmu is sworn in to the new CJI. Justice Gavai became a Buddhist and the only CJI belonging to the Dalit community, second only to Justice KG Balakrishnan, who retired as CJI in 2010. Judge Gawai will serve as CJI until his retirement on November 23, 2025.

Judge Gawai was born on November 24, 1960 in Amravati, Maharashtra, from a family deeply rooted in Ambedkar principles.

His father, RS Gavai, was an outstanding leader of the Republican Party of India and served as governor of Bihar, Sikkim and Kerala.
The bench, led by the new CJI, will file a petition on Thursday challenging the recently passed WAQF (Amendment) bill.
