Operation Sindor: The Center says Indigenous Weapons Systems are Very Effective

In Operation Sindoor, the performance of indigenous defense systems targeting Chinese and Turkish weapons systems stands out. For example, Akash Akash short-range ground-to-air systems (SAMs) demonstrated their capabilities, while SAMS, a Chinese headquarters deployed by Pakistan, failed to effectively intercept precisely directed ammunition launched by India.

“All offensive strikes against Pakistan’s military targets have lost Indian assets without losing Indian assets,” the News Information Bureau (PIB) said on Wednesday (May 14, 2025), highlighting the effectiveness of our surveillance, planning and delivery systems,” it said.

The statement said that the Indian Air Force (IAF) bypassed and blocked Pakistan’s Chinese air defense system and completed the mission in just 23 minutes, demonstrating India’s technological advantages.

Meanwhile, the situation along the western border remained calm on the evening of May 13-14, with the next round of talks between the directors of the General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan (DGMOS) so far. Following the exercise, DGMO speaks on the established hotline every Tuesday (May 13, 2025).

“In India’s defense sector growth is stronger than ever, driven by the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Defense exports jumped from Rs 68.6 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 236.22 crore in 2024-25, which is a 34-fold increase, which is 34 times,” Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said on social media.

Express interest

Officials pointed out that several countries in Southeast Asia, West Asia and Africa expressed interest in the Akash and Brahmin systems. “The recent episode is a verification of the real-time performance of these systems. We expect more interest in Indian systems,” he said.

Over the course of five days, with the Sindoor operation launched on the evening of May 6-7, the country’s air defense network proved its capability and resilience as Pakistan launched hundreds of drones, unmanned air vehicles and missiles in the waves, most of which were shot down high-speed aircraft, with only a few causing the impact.

Indian armed forces attacked several air defense radar sites, including the HQ-15 SAM system in Lahore. The Army and IAF’s air defense networks are supported by Akashteer Air Defence and Integrated Air Command System (IACCS), respectively.

Operation Sindoor also produced concrete evidence of hostile technology neutralized by the Indian system – recovered the Chinese PL-15 air-to-air missile, Turkey – ore drones, long-range rockets, limb drives and commercial drones. “These were found and determined, indicating that India’s indigenous air defense and electronic warfare networks remain excellent despite Pakistan’s attempt to leverage advanced foreign supplies of weapons,” it said.

Pakistan’s defense imports have grown significantly with the largest sources. According to the Stockholm Institute for International Peace, Pakistan’s imported weapons grew by 61% between 2015-19 and 2020-24. According to its March 2025 report, “China is more dominant as a supplier, accounting for 81% of Pakistan’s imported weapons imports in 2020-24, compared with 74% in 2015-19.”

Akashteer (a networking and automation project) signed a contract of nearly Rs 20 billion, signed in March 2023 and a year after that. Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) said on social media that its internal design and manufactured Akashteer system has proven its courage on the battlefield. “The ground defense system blended with the Akashts makes it difficult for Pakistan’s aerial adventures,” it said on ‘X’. It added: “The system exceeded users’ expectations and provided India with strong air defense during the current conflict.”

Bell said Akashteer ensures that the minimum Army Air Defense Department (AAD) can access seamless and unified air situations, thereby increasing situational awareness across the unit. Akashteer gives units on the frontline, enabling dynamic participation in decision making and preventing friendly incidents.

Bel said that bringing it together is a new automation program under the Akashteer project that will create a comprehensive air defense image for surveillance, tracking and shooting of air defense assets.

Akashteer connects all AAD’s radar and control centers and consolidates air defense pictures, eliminates duplication or overlap, and integrates all weapons. Officials explained that today’s demand is targeting a comprehensive air defense solution that can also communicate with IACCS to form a comprehensive air picture.

Army air defense artillery has been around since 1940 until 2005, although its ground-based air defense measures have increasingly been moved to the Air Force.
