Police oppose anti-war rally in Thrissur Sparks rage

Militants have conducted police operations over recent anti-war rally in Thrissur, claiming that this has raised concerns about the state’s “increasing tolerance”.

The rally organized by the People’s Anti-War Front was suspended by the police and several radicals were detained.

According to activists, police cited potential violence by members of Sangh Parivar, who reportedly intended to disrupt the peaceful march and attack the activists. “The logic is confusing,” the activist said. “While police detained those who threatened to release violence, they arrested peaceful protesters to avoid conflict.”

11 Arrested

Eleven militants were arrested, including an activist arrested for possessing a placard at the Kerala Sahitya Akademi site.

One of the organizers K. Sahadevan condemned the police action. “Two disturbing questions arise here,” he said. “First, why is the state allowing groups like Sangh Parivar to mimic the violent tactics seen in parts of North India?

Social indifference

Even more disturbing is the reaction of civil society and the state’s progressive circles, activists say. “The silence of the left progressive activist is disturbing,” Mr. Sahadwan said.

Despite setbacks, the people’s anti-war front remains firm. “We see war as a crime against humanity. We are more committed to building a powerful joint peace movement than ever before.”
