“What kind of statement…”: SC scolds MP Vijay Shah for calling Colonel Sofiya Qureshi “a terrorist sister”

The Supreme Court on Thursday strongly criticized Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah’s controversial remarks about Sofiya Qureshi, an official who decorated the Indian army. The court stressed that individuals holding constitutional positions must speak responsibly, especially during sensitive periods.

When seriously noting the comments, the bench asked, “What kind of statement are you making?” and reminded the minister of the importance of maintaining dignity in public speech when the country is experiencing a tense situation.

Previously, the Madhya Pradesh High Court had ordered the registration of Vijay Shah’s FIR. The BJP leader and minister of tribal affairs allegedly called Colonel Qureshi “the sister of the terrorist”, sparking widespread public anger. Many people called for opposition to a statement from a senior service officer, which was completely unacceptable.
Colonel Qureshi and wing commander Colonel Vyomika Singh have been a key face for the Indian armed forces in the media briefing on Sindoor operations. Two officers often appear with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to provide the latest news on the mission.

Vijay Shah has now gone to the Supreme Court to challenge the orders of the High Court. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear his plea on Friday.
