When big tech company Apple announced that it had made an iPhone in India, Trump told its CEO Tim Cook that “is not built in India” and that “India can take care of itself.” Trump made the statement after the two met at a business event in Doha.
Trump suggests Tim Cook to produce in the US instead of India
Trump said at the event that Tim Cook had a “small problem”. “I said to him, my friend, I treat you very well. What you think is $500 billion, but now I hear that you are building all over India. I don’t want you to build in India. If you want to take care of India, because India is India, because India is one of the highest tariff countries in India, it’s hard for the president to sell it in India,” the president said.
Donald Trump is a four-day visit to Gulf countries such as Qatar, the UAE, discussing key investment and trade agreements. During the negotiations, Trump said he had problems with the production of Apple iPhones in India, which should be done in the United States. Trump said Apple will “raise their production in the United States.”
Following this Trump statement, the question is whether iPhone manufacturers will start production in the United States. The move toward iPhone manufacturers to India is part of a strategy driven by highly reciprocated tariffs announced by China and the United States, so Apple decided to transition all iPhone production originally scheduled for the U.S. market to India.
Will Tim Cook start production in the United States?
Similarly, the possible reason Apple CEO wants to produce iPhones in India is the cheap labor and overall production costs in countries such as China and India. Another aspect is that in the United States, iPhone production requires high technology. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in an interview with CNBC that when he spoke to Tim Cook, he said: “I need to have robot weapons with scale and precision to enable me to bring them here.”
The statement was posted on the rapid expansion of Apple’s iPhone production in India, as the company made about US$22 billion (Rs 1,882,225,268,000) worth of its production by March this year. India has three production plants in India, two have three production plants in Tamil Nadu, one in Karnataka.
Trump and India’s trade tariffs
