Robert Brieger, the former head of the Austrian armed forces, will be replaced by Irish Lieutenant Seán Clancy for a three-year term. Even as most of Europe’s leaders are focused on the threat posed by Russia, the EU supports efforts to rebuild military power throughout the continent. Brieger reiterated the need for cooperation with the Nato Alliance, but warned that the U.S. shift to the Indonesian region means that Europe needs to do more for its defense.
