Six crew members rescued Mangaluru after cargo ship sinks

Mangaluru: In the early morning of May 14, the ship on board sank, about 70 nautical miles (about 130 kilometers) southwest of Mangaluru, and the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) rescued six crew members “MSV Salamath”.

The Coast Guard said it received a distress alert from MT Epic Susui around 12.15 pm on May 14, a passing ship that discovered the drift of “Salamas” with six people about 52 nautical miles off the coast of Sula Rathkar, Karnataka.

The Coast Guard ship ICGS Vikram was on regular patrols in the area and was transferred to the scene. The coat guard quickly found the boat and brought all six onto it safely.

The crew identified as Ismail Shareef, Alemun Ahmed Bhai Ghavda, Kakal Suleman Ismail, Akbar Abdul Surani, Kasam Ismail Mepani and Azmal were forgotten to abandon the sunken ship and boarded a mini pie, which helped them continue to move forward until they could arrive.

On May 15, all six were first aided and brought to the port of New Mangalore safely. Local authorities are expected to question the crew’s knowledge of more about what led to the sinking.

Preliminary reports indicate that “Salamas” left the port of Mangaluru on May 12 and headed to Kadmat Island in Lakshadweep, carrying cargo of cement and building materials. At around 5.30 am on May 14, the ship began to be immersed in water and eventually sank. The exact cause of the flood has not been determined.
