Action Sindoor: India focuses on Gulf imports to discover Pakistani goods

New Delhi: In addition to certain transshipment hubs, India is reviewing imports from the UAE and Iran and other Gulf countries to ensure that no goods from Pakistan enter the country indirectly through these routes.

Officials say strict inspections on labels of imported goods and the standards of origin of items from these countries are underway as India earlier raised concerns about the UAE that the dates for Pakistan have been brought to the country. They added that this constitutes an abuse of the Indian-US integrated economic partnership agreement.

After a terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, New Delhi imposed a full ban on Pakistan’s cargo, including goods through third countries, with 26 people killed. Pakistan suspended all trade relations with India, including through third countries.
“The review is conducted from the UAE and certain countries (such as Pakistani goods) and imports from transshipment centers.” The rule of origin is the standard for determining the national origin of the product and its therefore tax benefits.

Of these, the date worth US$123.82 million comes from the UAE. India imported fresh and dry dates worth $277.25 million in all regions of the fiscal year 24. “The restrictions imposed for the benefit of national security and public policy are for the benefit of national security and public policy,” the Ministry of Commerce said in the notice. “Any exception to this ban shall be approved by the Government of India in advance.”

Officials say it would be easier to take a closer look at the amount of imports generated entirely in a certain country, but things can be complicated when value is added. In this case, the authorities need to conduct more detailed inspections. “In addition, the transport of goods is under scrutiny. India has no notice that goods on transit will not be subject to scrutiny,” the official said.

The imports from India from Pakistan were $2.88 million in the fiscal year 280 from April to February, with plants and seeds, dates, figs and malt extracts all taking the list.

Bilateral trade has declined after India imposed 200% of its responsibilities on Pakistani goods in 2019 after the Pulwama terrorist attacks.

Although India granted Pakistan the most popular national status in 1996, neighboring countries have not yet received any reward.
