Johnnie Norman, 35, his 36-year-old wife, Rachel, secretly asked hotel staff to put 30 kinds of chip bags in bed, and they went out to surprise his wife who liked crispy on his birthday.

However, the staff misunderstood and opened the bag and sprinkled potato chips on the sheets, such as salty confetti.

Rachel, shocked, thought they were a victim of a strange intrusion when she opened the door and saw the scene, but still decided to eat some.

After Johnny inexplicably explained what must have happened, the couple couldn’t stop laughing.

Rachel loves potato chips and eats four bags a day – spending up to £15 in snacks – until recently reduced every two days to make it healthier.

“I’m hysterical,” said Rachel, an NHS worker from Akerlington, Lancashire.
