G. Viswanathan, founder and principal of Vellore Technology (VIT), said both central and state governments should increase the total spending on education to promote more students’ enrollment.

He delivered a presidential speech at Stars Day in 2025, which was organized on its campus by VIT’s Universal Higher Education Trust.

Mr Viswanatan said there was a lack of adequate spending in the absence of higher research by students with limited education, especially those in rural areas, because only parents with large incomes could afford their children’s higher education. “In the 2025-26 union budget, although the long-term demand is 6%, only 2.5% of GDP is allocated to education,” he said.

He added: “Only about 28% of the Indian population receives higher education, while more than 60% in China.”

According to him, while India currently has an average income of $2,700, compared with $13,100 in 1990, India is ahead of China by more than $50. He said India has lagged behind for years mainly due to poor allocation of education funds.

Meanwhile, 1,014 students in Tamil Nadu benefited from the Interstellar Program, which has spent about Rs 90 crore since its inception in 2008.

By then, Mr. Viswanathan released VIT Stars magazine in front of actor Karthi, director TJ Gnanavel, and VIT vice presidents Sankar Viswanathan and Sekar Viswanathan.
