AP CS requires electricity utilities to be ready for storm

Vijayawada: AP Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand has instructed Andhra Pradesh electric utility companies to remain on high alert in view of the expected premonsoon thunderstorms and gusts.

He directed DISCOM’s CMD to monitor the situation every day to ensure close coordination from assistant engineers to supervised engineers at the field level. In the event of any interference, this will help to restore power immediately.

In view of the red alert issued for coastal areas, Vijayanand advised the field teams of Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram to maintain additional vigilance and responsiveness. He warned that any negligence of duty would be taken seriously.

CS directs all Discom to set up 24×7 control rooms for 24/7 monitoring, emergency response and timely complaint remedies. He asked the distribution company to provide consumers and public representatives with advance hints about planned power outages or maintenance works.

Vijayanand said: “AP peak electricity demand on May 13, 2025 was 12,600 MW, with an average daily consumption of around 228 mu. Electricity demand is expected to remain high in the coming months (June 2025 to November 2025), with a daily range of 218 to 235 MU ranging from 218 to 235 MU. Discoms should strategically exchange electricity through power exchange in the power exchange to avoid the use of power exchange for exchange.

Furthermore, the Chief Secretary stressed that Discom officials must be visible at work locations, especially during online maintenance and tree branch pruning, to ensure proper execution. To improve accountability, he directed each Discom supervisor to be allocated two to three regions for centralized monitoring and timely reporting.

“During the upcoming monsoon season, everything must be done to maintain the reliability of the system and ensure better service to consumers,” he added.
