Singapore’s COVID cases surge: Loose new variants? |

Singapore is experiencing a huge surge in 199 cases. The number of common cases in the week from April 27 to May 3, 2025 increased to 14,200, compared with 11,100 in the previous week. This increase is attributed to the gradual weakening of immunity and the spread of new variants. “Currently, LF.7 and NB.1.8 (two descendants of the JN.1 variant) are the major COVID-19 variants of the Singapore cycle, accounting for more than two-thirds of local sequencing cases. JN.1 is also used for the current Covid 19The rise in infections has led to an increase in hospitalizations, prompting officials to advise the public to remain vigilant.Symptoms associated with the current wave include cough, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, brain fog, and conjunctivitis. These symptoms are usually mild, but individuals are encouraged to monitor their health and seek medical care if necessary.
Vaccination can still effectively prevent serious diseases
To mitigate the differences, the Ministry of Health recommends that high-risk populations (such as the elderly and immunity-deficient) receive promotional vaccination. In addition, it is recommended that the public practice standard precautions, including wearing a mask in a crowded area, washing hands regularly, and staying at home when they are uncomfortable. It is recommended that people with severe Covid-19 have increased risk, such as those aged 60 and older, medically vulnerable, or residents of elderly care facilities, to keep vaccinated up to date, i.e., to receive additional doses about a year or so after the last dose. Healthcare workers and people living or working with medically vulnerable people are also encouraged to get vaccinated.“Others who wish to receive a vaccine for Covid-19-19 can continue to do this,” the Ministry of Health said in a press release.
Is there a threat?
We are all hearing about the increase in the number of COVID patients reported in various Southeast Asian countries, especially in Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand this summer. So, what is disturbing? It is precisely because this wave is increasingly affecting the populations of these countries, and during these summer months, this is usually not the month you peak in these respiratory viruses. The good news is that the existing variants that are common in these countries are not much different from the ones we experienced in the previous wave. The reported variant is JN.1, which is the last famous dominant variant in the last outbreak of competition including the United States and the last trend, as in some countries about a year ago, there were some variants.Experts further explain what we know about these variants belonging to the Omicron family – they do not cause serious or serious illness in most people. However, this is contagious and spreads rapidly in a community or in a country. This variant causes the same preventive measures and symptoms as any typical interconnected symptoms. Without distinguishing the symptoms, this virus is nothing unique.Common sense things like social distancing, using masks, keeping your place indoors if you get infected, and washing your hands is the key point. Another thing is that there must be a very strong system for reporting cases between countries, because that’s how people know if the virus is now crossing the border and spreading further to other countries in the world, especially in Asian countries. Therefore, one of these is a powerful mechanism for national reporting in countries currently being reported and countries including India, which is very strict with people entering the country and may bring any infection. So if we start to see these cases spread outside of these two, three countries, it will become important to screen and isolate such cases. Obviously, testing, especially genomic monitoring, is crucial to identify which particular strain is the prominent strain that causes the outbreak. Therefore, this data needs to be shared among countries and within countries between different states. Therefore, testing is of course important.
Why did this surge happen?
Dr. Budhiraja explained: “Now, this revival has happened in discussions and debates in these countries, especially Singapore and Hong Kong. So, I want to say here, first of all, people need to know that despite the small numbers that most people really forget about its existence, it is not the case. These viruses tend to maintain a more prevalent form after the pandemic phase ends and regularly tend to cause these outbreaks that may be limited regional outbreaks or may be re-spread to neighboring countries and cause larger outbreaks. The reason given is not that the virus is more toxic, but is related to a gradually weakened immunity or a decrease in the overall population, especially since routine vaccination has not yet occurred. So, over the years, a person’s immunity against Covid tends to decline, and it is assumed that this could be a decrease in immunity in the community or in the entire population, which causes the virus to come back. There is no doubt that the virus is not more toxic, meaning it does not cause serious cases or deaths unless in very high-risk individuals, elderly people, immune hypofunction, and various medical comorbidities. ”
So, what should a country like India do?
“Obviously, be alert to any cases entering the country and to the increase in the number of people with reported flu-like diseases. Any situation where there is suspicion, especially for travelers to test, should be tested for genomic surveillance tests, and of course, that person should isolate himself. In this phase, other than that, no large-scale recommendations are needed for people with a larger population base, as India has not yet reported any increase in the number of cases. Finally reported that there are about 100 active co-proof cases in the country, which is at the baseline level. If people find cases are getting bigger and bigger, then people may have to rethink our vaccination strategies, especially for boosting doses, especially for those at high risk, I’m talking about older people, those with medical comorbidities, those with machine failure and those who are receiving immunosuppressive drugs, etc. There are no reports of increased mortality rates caused by this virus, not the previous wave, but as a country, as a country, you must keep your tentacles high, so stay alert. If a person starts to see a case appear, then of course, preparations must be taken to cater to this surge. But I can clearly say that there is absolutely no panic, no panic state. However, vigilance and vigilance must be maintained over the next few weeks to understand how such outbreaks occur in some parts of the Asia Effects other parts of the world have occurred. ” Dr. Budhiraja explained.
