Investigate suspicious food poisoning in a medical school women’s hotel

More than 80 residents in the women’s hotel at Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College have committed illness after suspected food poisoning.

The incident was reportedly reportedly after students ate chicken dishes in a hotel chaos, after which they developed nausea, stomachache and other discomforts. Many of them were subsequently hospitalized at MCH.

However, U. Anuja, president of the university, said there was no confirmed evidence of food poisoning. She said the affected students did not experience serious health problems, adding that the cause of the symptoms was inconclusive.

Similar symptoms

The incident was revealed Friday when five students sought emergency medical care for symptoms related to diarrhea. Subsequently, several more students showed similar symptoms, although their condition did not require treatment.

With more than 600 students living in hotels, university authorities are investigating all possible sources of disease. Food samples have been sent for laboratory analysis.

Dr. Anuja also said that preventive measures have been strengthened, and sanitation programmes and the supply of clean drinking water in hotel kitchens have been strengthened. Food Safety, Microbiology and Stewardship Departments are coordinating follow-up.
