Nagarjuna Sagar is the main tourist destination for the Macharla constituency in Palnadu district of Andhra Pradesh, and will make a makeover with the central government approving Rs 25 crore for its development.

The official order issued by the central government says the funds have been allocated under the “Challenge-Based Destination Development” program of the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 program.

The initiative aims to enrich the region’s Buddhist heritage and cultural landmarks while enhancing tourism infrastructure.

The Andhra Pradesh government has made a detailed recommendation to the Mission Bureau to seek financial assistance to develop Nagarjuna Sagar as a famous tourist destination. After a thorough assessment, the Central Sanctions and Monitoring Committee approved the proposal.

In the pipeline

With approved funding, Nagarjuna Sagar will witness improvements in infrastructure, including the development of a Buddhist-themed garden and heritage structure, the establishment of bio-checks with compartments, and the installation of CCTV cameras and other security systems.

A dedicated travel website and online ticketing platform will also be launched, as well as a 3D hologram system and a real-time interactive touch screen.

Training and sensitization workshops will be conducted and green parks will be created to improve ecological balance.

Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) will oversee the implementation of the project, which is planned to be completed within one year.

Narasaraopet MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu played a crucial role in interacting with the authorities concerned to ensure recognition.

He said the funding will greatly increase the tourism potential of Nagarjuna Sagar.

Macharla MLA Julakanti Brahma Reddy welcomed this development and stressed efforts to ensure the rapid and effective implementation of the project.
