A boat in Kerala was caught in the waters of thoothukudi on Sunday, illegally entering and fishing during the ongoing ban.
According to the Tamil Nadu Marine Fishing Act 1983, a 61-day fishing ban is implemented every year between April 14 and June 15 to protect the breeding season on the Tamil Nadu coastline. The ban applies to all mechanical ships in Tamil Nadu.
Despite the strict compliance of the regulations by fishermen in Tamil Nadu, complaints against fishermen in Kerala are still illegally entering Tamil Nadu Waters, especially in the Thoothukudi area, have been a huge complaint among fishermen’s communities.
This year, local fishermen also filed a petition with collector K. Elambahavath, urging action against the violation. Mr. Elambahavath took action, ordering the Ministry of Fisheries and the Coastal Security Organization to patrol the Thoothukudi Waters and take action against illegal contestants.
Therefore, during the patrol, the Ministry of Fisheries, together with the Coastal Security Police Team, seized a boat from Kerala on charges of violating the fishing ban rules. The boat is about 42 nautical miles from the thoothukudi coast, and there are 17 fishermen on board. The ship was further taken back to the thoothukudi fishing port and was banned from further action.
It is worth noting that this marks the third ship being caught in just two days for violating the fishing ban.
